Vøringsfossen is perhaps the most famous waterfall in Norway. Vast quantities of water plunge 182 metres down from the Hardangervidda plateau to Måbødalen. The waterfall and the dramatic transition between fjord and mountain plateau make quite an impression. Vøringsfossen has been visited frequently, and the landscape surrounding the waterfall bears evidence of wear and tear. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration wants to make the area safer, create unity and cohesion between the various viewing points and heighten the nature experience.
The attraction will be considerably improved, both visually and safety wise, with new viewing platforms, a spectacular footbridge across the river, new paths and improved visitor facilities such as parking and toilets. The project has been designed by architect Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk.
